Malthus was Right!

We're all going to die

Well, probably not right away. But, Germany has banned plating GM corn. Seriously? Malthus' dire predictions were put off initially by the nascent industrial revolution: the mechanical amplification of labour leading to increased production. Since then, we've dodged the growing population/ finite agricultural capacity by a chemical revolution: fertilizer and pesticides. What's next to save our collective bacon, or bacon sustaining plant production? A genetic revolution. Which, surely, will have some unintended side effects, but there is really no other option out there right now that can lead to the sort of agricultrual yeilds that will be needed to maintain and sustain an exponentally increasing human population.

But then again, I have problems with the whole idea that the global economy predicated on the assumption of constant growth in a system with finite space/ arrable land/ resources/ etc.
